NJN News Highlights NSF Geoscience Education Outreach Grant

On Friday, January 16, 2009, NJN News featured a story with Dr. Alec Gates promoting geoscience careers in the Newark public schools. The project, which is supported by a 5-year, $1.7 million grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) attempts to introduce students with diverse backgrounds to the geosciences.


NSF GK-12 Fellow Participates in Educational Outreach at Fall AGU Meeting

In addition to the scientific contributions at last months’ American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in San Francisco, CA, the Earth and Environmental Science Department was represented at the "Exploration Station" educational outreach event by graduate student Andy Parsekian. This event is designed to allow children and parents the opportunity to discuss science with researchers and to get involved with many geoscience activities.

These hands-on activities are used by Andy and other fellows in the department throughout the year in conjunction with the National Science Foundation GK-12 program which brings science to 6th grade classrooms around Newark.
