Masters of Science in Environmental Geology

Course Requirements
Students enrolled in the M.S. Program in Environmental Geology at Rutgers-Newark may elect a thesis option (24 credits of course work plus 6 credits of thesis research) or a non-thesis option (36 credits of course work plus a final comprehensive written examination) and will be required to take a minimum of 15 graduate credits at Rutgers-Newark from among graduate courses in:

Environmental Geology, Seminar in Environmental Geology, Analytical Methods in Environmental Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Geophysics, Soil Geochemistry and Geomorphology

The remaining credits may be chosen from among all graduate courses offered at Rutgers-New Brunswick Geological Sciences or from among selected graduate courses in Remote Sensing, GIS and Hydrology offered at the NJIT Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. These and other courses offered outside Rutgers-Newark that are used to satisfy degree requirements have to be approved by the Graduate Program Director.

Thesis Research
Thesis research is expected to involve environmental aspects in geologic disciplines such as geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, geomorphology, structural geology, mineralogy-petrology and sedimentation-stratigraphy. The thesis topic has to be approved by the Graduate Program Director and a faculty committee chaired by the primary thesis advisor. The completed thesis project is presented to the Thesis Committee and the Graduate Program Director in a final oral examination. Normally, about two years are needed to complete the M.S. Program.
